If you are a little bit unsure about the confusing selection of memory cards available then read this simple guide.
But if you already know what you want just order it!
Why is there more than one type of memory?
Different consumer electronics companies have come up with their own types of memory, and of course they each claim their type is better than another. It's a bit like Beta v. VHS. With a number of competing formats and sub-formats to choose from it can seem confusing, but generally a device like a mobile phone will only be compatible with one or maybe two types of memory so you don't have a free choice anyway.
How do I choose the memory format for my phone or PDA?
We have done the hard work so you don't have to - simply select your make of mobile phone from our accessory menu and you will then see displayed all types of compatible memory for your phone. If your phone takes one or two types of memory we will list only those types, and all the different sizes available.
Are different types of memory compatible:
Generally different format memory cards are incompatible with each other - and they tend to be different sizes, so you will not be able to stuff a Smartmedia Card into a Multimedia Card slot!! However, some devices will accept more than one type of memory - the most common for this is MMC and SD. MMC and SD cards are the same physical size and some devices will take both. For example, the Orange SPV, O2 XDA and the Motorola 3G phones can take both. (This list changes all the time). Current Nokia phones though will only take MMC.
How to choose between MMC and SD?
If your device takes both then you have a choice to make. Perhaps you own a camera or some other digital device which also takes the one of those formats? In that case you could choose to buy the same type of card. SD is the newer and more advanced format, so if you have no other reason to choose between them then choose SD.
Baby sized cards?
A new trend is for memory cards to become smaller but still be compatible with the bigger brother with the use of a supplied size adaptor. For example, Sony Memory Stick has spawned Sony Memory Stick Duo. If you have a "Duo" card you just use the supplied adaptor to put it into the bigger slot of a device which takes original Memory Sticks. MMC has also got a little brother called RS-MMC (reduced size MMC).
What about PC readers?
We sell a 6 in 1 memory card reader, when connected to your PC this will read a number of types of card:
